Former DU VC joins Grameen University as adviser
Former VC of the University of Dhaka Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan has joined Grameen University as Senior Strategic Adviser. He assumed the responsibility after obtaining permission from the University of Dhaka. The information was disclosed in a press release issued by the Grameen University Trust on Tuesday.
Niaz Ahmed Khan took charge as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka on 27 August 2024 following the post-uprising situation after the student-public movement. After serving for around 18 months, he resigned on 10 February 2026.
The press release said Grameen University’s academic framework is being developed based on Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus’s “Three Zero” vision—zero poverty, zero unemployment and zero net carbon emissions.
The university has already identified 14 priority programmes under five schools, while recruitment for key positions including Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Treasurer is currently underway.
Regarding its formal launch, the statement said the university received final academic approval from the Ministry of Education in March 2025 and from the University Grants Commission (UGC) in April 2025. The institution will be governed by a trustee board working on a voluntary basis for public welfare.
Emphasising social responsibility, the trustees have pledged to contribute their expertise without receiving any salary, remuneration or sitting allowances for board meetings.
Initially, Grameen University will operate from the Grameen Caledonian College of Nursing (GCCN) campus in Diabari, Dhaka. The nursing college will later function under the university’s Faculty of Medicine. A 700-bed international hospital, a medical college and a health research institute are also under construction at the same site, which is expected to create an integrated platform for medical education, healthcare and research.
