IAEA chief hails BD nuclear milestone
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has congratulated Bangladesh on the first fuel loading at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, calling it a historic milestone.
In a press release issued on 28 April, he said the development marks Bangladesh’s entry into a new phase as one of the latest countries to incorporate nuclear energy into its power mix, with the aim of generating reliable, low-carbon electricity.
Grossi noted that the achievement reflects a long-term
national commitment, bringing both significant benefits and responsibilities.
He added that it also provides an opportunity to reaffirm commitments to safety, security and safeguards in nuclear operations.
The IAEA chief said the agency has supported Bangladesh throughout the project and will continue its assistance in the years ahead.
