Justice sought for BD students killed in Florida

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Sunday said that Bangladesh expects those responsible for the killing of two Bangladeshi students in Florida to be brought to justice through a proper and thorough investigation.

Calling the incident extremely tragic, she said the body of one victim has been recovered, while the other is yet to be found.

The deceased students, Jamil Ahmed Limon and Nahida Sultana Brishti, were PhD candidates at the University of South Florida. They were allegedly killed by a former student of the same university.

The state minister said Bangladesh is maintaining close communication with its mission in Washington, as well as with the US State Department, the FBI, and other relevant authorities regarding the incident.
She added that she has spoken with both families and assured them of full support from the Bangladesh government.

Regarding the repatriation of Limon’s body, she said it will be brought back to Bangladesh after completion of autopsy and necessary legal formalities, with assistance from the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.

Shama Obaed expressed hope that the US authorities will conduct a comprehensive investigation and ensure justice for the victims.

Responding to another question, she said Bangladesh expects its vessels, including MV Banglar Joyjatra, to pass safely through the Strait of Hormuz.

She also noted that Bangladesh may explore future energy cooperation with Senegal and Angola, and that communication with these countries will be strengthened following her recent visit to Africa.
