BD seeks energy coop with Algeria
Dhaka, in a move to strengthen national resource stability, has formally requested enhanced cooperation in the energy sector from Algeria.
The request was made by the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaed Islam, during a courtesy call from the Algerian Ambassador, Abdelouahab Saidani.
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focused heavily on ensuring long-term energy security for Bangladesh.
The State Minister expressed gratitude toward Algerian authorities for their proactive interest in expanding collaboration within the hydrocarbon sector, marking a significant step in the bilateral relationship.
Hydrocarbons typically refer to organic compounds like petroleum and natural gas, which serve as the primary fuel sources for modern power generation and industrial activity.
Beyond energy, the two representatives discussed a wide range of avenues for trade and investment, specifically targeting infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, shipbuilding, and the manpower sector.
To formalize these growing ties, both sides welcomed the ongoing process of establishing a Joint Consultative Commission.
Ambassador Saidani reiterated Algeria’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s development, noting potential for collaboration in manpower, education and agriculture and diplomatic support.
To further solidify the “brotherly relations” between the two nations, Minister Shama Obaed Islam emphasized the importance of people-to-people contacts.
This includes proposed cultural and sports exchanges and the pursuit of a mutual visa waiver agreement to facilitate easier travel.
The meeting concluded with a mutual call for regular bilateral engagements and high-level visits to ensure the partnership continues to deepen across all sectors.
Ambassador Saidani reaffirmed that Algeria remains a dedicated partner, committed to strengthening the longstanding friendship between the two countries.
