Abahani take revenge by defeating Mohammedan in BFL

Souleymane Diabate (left) of Dhaka Abahani Limited celebrates with his teammates after scoring the match-decider against Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited in their 12th match of the Bangladesh Football League at Shaheed Dhirendranath Dutta Stadium in Cumilla on Friday.

Everyone knew Sulemane Diabate as Mohammedan’s home boy. Suddenly he signed up for the arch-rivals Dhaka Abahani Limited from the white and black camp.

On Friday, Abahani took revenge by defeating Mohammedan with the match-decider goal of that Malian striker.

Despite being behind in the second round of the Bangladesh Football League (BFL) Dhaka Abahani Limited survived the title fight well by defeating the white and blacks with a score of 2-1 in their 12th match of BFL at Shaheed Dhirendranath Dutta Stadium in Cumilla. Mohammedan previously defeated Abahani in the first round.

Bashundhara Kings are on top with 24 points playing 11 matches. Abahani are in second place with 22 points after their sixth win in 12 matches.

On the other hand, Mohammedan has dropped to seventh place in the table with only 11 points.

Mohammedan took the lead at the start of the match.

In the third minute, Muzaffar Muzaffarov of Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited scored an ‘Olympic’ goal from a corner kick to give Mohammedan the lead.

The corner kick from the Uzbekistan midfielder, taken from the left, went straight inside the second post and into the net. Mitul Marma could do nothing.

It would be difficult for the white and blacks to hold on to the lead, as indicated by Abahani’s tactics.

Mirajul Islam equalized for the blue and blues in the 17th minute. The striker entered the box eluded Mohammedan goalie and sent the ball into the net with a great finish.

After the break, Abahani continued to put pressure on the white and blacks’ defense. In the 66th minute, Emeka gave Abahani another great pass.

He passed three footballers and sent the ball to Souleymane Diabate in a cutback.

Diabate scored his first goal against his former club by turning 180 degrees inside the box and passing between two footballers.

Towards the end, Mohammedan wasted at least three chances. Rakib’s shot was blocked by a defender.

Muzaffarov missed a great opportunity when he struck a free-kick from just outside the box and but it far over the crossbar.

Alfaz Ahmed’s team could not equalise when Boateng’s header went just outside the post in the corner in added time.
