Jamaat-led alliance to hold really on April 4

An 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a rally and protest march in Dhaka on Saturday (April 4), demanding implementation of the referendum verdict through constitutional reform. The programme is scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

The announcement was made by Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad following a liaison committee meeting of the alliance. He said the opposition bloc would also conduct outreach activities, including leaflet distribution, to mobilise public support for their demands.

Azad added that seminars and symposiums would be organised focusing on the implementation of the referendum and the July Charter.

He warned that the alliance may announce tougher programmes if the government continues to ignore public opinion, noting that the next course of action will be decided at a meeting of top alliance leaders on April 7.

Criticising the government’s stance, he said the ruling party’s opposition to the referendum was “unfortunate” and amounted to a denial of earlier commitments that led to the formation of the interim government and subsequent election.

He further alleged that the 15th Amendment had enabled authoritarian rule and claimed that the current administration was following a similar path.

The Jamaat leader also raised concerns over the ongoing fuel crisis, accusing the government of providing misleading information.

He said fuel remains scarce at petrol pumps despite official assurances, and criticised the proposal to hold online classes three days a week to reduce transport costs, calling it contradictory to the government’s position on the situation.
