Measles Outbreak: HC petition seeks school closure

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking directives to keep schools closed until the measles outbreak subsides. The petition also requests the formation of a high-level investigation committee into the recent deaths of 47 children caused by measles.

On Thursday, Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Purnima Jahan filed the writ with the relevant branch of the High Court. The petition also seeks a rule against the respondents’ failures. A division bench of the High Court may hear the case on Thursday, reports media.

The petition requests the issuance of a rule asking the respondents to explain why their inaction and failure in preventing and controlling the measles outbreak should not be declared illegal, arbitrary, and beyond legal authority. It also states that failures to ensure timely vaccination, maintain vaccine availability, provide adequate healthcare services, and deliver emergency responses constitute a clear violation of the Constitution.

Additionally, the petition urges the respondents to immediately implement a nationwide emergency measles vaccination program, ensure the supply of vaccines, syringes, and necessary logistics, and establish effective emergency response systems across the country, including adequate medical facilities, specialized units, and ICUs.
