PM writes to Qatari Amir expressing solidarity
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has conveyed Bangladesh’s solidarity with the State of Qatar and reaffirmed the importance of continued economic and bilateral cooperation amid the evolving regional situation, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a letter addressed to the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Prime Minister expressed Bangladesh’s support for the leadership, government and people of Qatar and emphasised the strong and mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries.
Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Humaiun Kobir delivered the personal letter during a meeting with Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi in Doha.
The adviser is visiting Qatar as the Prime Minister’s special envoy and is expected to travel to other Gulf countries as part of efforts to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties.
In the letter, the Prime Minister expressed appreciation for Qatar’s continued hosting of around 450,000 Bangladeshi expatriate workers and acknowledged the measures taken by Qatari authorities to ensure their safety and welfare.
He also reaffirmed Bangladesh’s readiness to extend necessary cooperation if required.
The Prime Minister also recalled Qatar’s support in facilitating special air ambulance services in January and May 2025 for the transfer of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia to London for urgent medical treatment, describing the gesture as a reflection of strong bilateral goodwill.
During the meeting, both sides discussed opportunities to deepen economic cooperation, particularly in labour mobility, investment, and development partnerships.
The Foreign Affairs Adviser appreciated Qatar’s constructive role in promoting regional stability, dialogue and humanitarian engagement, while highlighting the importance of expanding trade and economic collaboration.
The adviser also held a separate meeting with Qatar’s Minister of Labour Dr Ali bin Saeed bin Samikh Al Marri, where issues related to labour cooperation and the welfare of Bangladeshi workers were discussed.
He conveyed the Prime Minister’s condolences over the recent bereavement in the minister’s family following a military helicopter crash and extended an invitation for the labour minister to visit Bangladesh.
During his visit, the Foreign Affairs Adviser also met officials at the Bangladesh Embassy in Doha to review issues related to expatriate welfare, labour management and economic cooperation with Qatar.
Officials said the visit reflects Bangladesh’s continued engagement with Gulf partners to strengthen labour markets, remittance flows and broader economic cooperation.
