Liberation War mass graves still left unmarked

Across Bangladesh, many killing fields from the 1971 Liberation War remain neglected, even decades after one of the bloodiest genocides of the 20th century.

While some memorials and national sites are maintained, countless rural locations where mass killings occurred have received little attention, experts and local residents say.

During the nine-month war, an estimated three million people were killed and millions displaced.
Entire families were wiped out in villages across the country, leaving behind mass graves and abandoned killing sites.

Many of these sites now lie unmarked or have reverted to farmland, their grim history fading from public memory.

Local residents and elders in several districts recount stories of attacks and mass executions, but the absence of formal recognition means these oral histories are at risk of being lost.

“We remember what happened here, but there is no marker, no monument,” said a villager in a northern district who wished to remain anonymous.

Historians and educators stress the importance of preserving these sites. “Killing fields are not just locations; they are repositories of collective memory,” said a Dhaka-based researcher on the Liberation War.

“Preservation ensures respect for victims, educates future generations, and prevents denial of history.”

Despite the establishment of national memorials and museums, grassroots-level killing fields often remain outside official records. Many schools do not include local war history in their curriculum, and artifacts and mass graves at these sites are frequently unprotected.Experts call for urgent measures to preserve the remaining sites.

They suggest government support for mapping and maintaining killing fields, community involvement in documenting history, and educational programs for local youth. Civil society organizations are also encouraged to help create digital archives and awareness campaigns.

As the decades pass, the warning from historians is clear: without proper preservation and recognition, many genocide killing fields risk being forgotten, taking with them the stories of those who sacrificed their lives for Bangladesh’s independence.
