4 arrested over Shaheed Minar killing
Police have reported the arrest of four individuals in connection with the murder of Rakibul Islam (25) in the Central Shaheed Minar area of the capital.
According to police, the murder was premeditated and stemmed from a romantic dispute. A total of seven to eight individuals were involved in the attack. The attackers were allegedly hired from a specific area and brought to Dhaka to carry out the murder. Rakibul’s family has filed a case over the incident, reports media.
This information was shared through a WhatsApp message sent by the Media and Public Relations Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Wednesday morning.
Rakibul was killed on Sunday night after being stabbed and shot by assailants in the Central Shaheed Minar area.
According to police and eyewitnesses, around 9:15pm on the day of the incident, Rakibul was sitting on the steps of the Central Shaheed Minar with his friends. At that time, a group of assailants approached and first opened fire at him. They then stabbed him indiscriminately before fleeing the scene. One of the attackers was caught on the spot with a machete by bystanders and handed over to Shahbagh Police Station.
Rakibul was from Bhola Sadar Upazila. His father, Tarikul Islam Khokon, is an employee of Kuwait Maitree Hall at Dhaka University. Rakibul was a second-year undergraduate student at Borhanuddin Postgraduate College in the capital.
