100 held in Mohammadpur raids

City Desk :

An operation was conducted by Dhaka police in Mohammadpur and Adabor, arresting 100 suspected criminals as part of efforts to curb gangs, extortionists, and drug dealers.

The raids, carried out from 10pm Wednesday to 2am Thursday, were aimed at restoring public safety, officers said.

Tejgaon Deputy Commissioner Ibne Mizan said the operation was carried out to ensure people can safely observe fasting during the month of Ramadan and celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr peacefully.

He also said police will continue such operations to ensure public safety and to prevent teenage gangs and robbers from operating in Mohammadpur.

Police said the 100 arrestees, handed over to Mohammadpur and Adabor Police, were accused of different crimes.

Since the political upheaval on Aug 5, 2024, Mohammadpur has emerged as one of Dhaka’s most crime-ridden areas, plagued by theft, robbery, and even murder. Frustrated by the relentless cycle of street crimes, locals have repeatedly approached police and staged protests, demanding action.

In response, law-enforcing agencies have been conducting periodic raids in an effort to rein in criminal activity and restore order.
Yet, despite these interventions, reports of robberies and violent incidents involving teenage gangs persist.
Authorities said that operations will continue unabated, aiming to stabilise the area and normalise daily life for local residents.
