Asif, Ishraque likely to contest for DSCC mayoral post
City Desk :
State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain and National Citizen Party (NCP) Spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan both have expressed their intention to contest the upcoming mayoral election of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), setting the stage for a competitive race.
“InshaaAllah, I will contest the city election from Dhaka South,” he wrote on his verified Facebook page.
The last mayoral election for Dhaka South City Corporation was held on 1 February 2020 amid widespread allegations of irregularities and rigging. Ishraque was the BNP candidate in that election.
Following the ouster of the Awami League regime on 5 August 2024, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, who won the questionable election, was removed from his post.
According to NCP sources, Asif Mahmud is likely to run for the mayoral post of DSCC from Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP). Sources within the party said he is being considered as a potential candidate.
On 27 March 2025, a tribunal declared Ishraque the winner of that city election.
The Election Commission formally pronounced Ishraque the DSCC mayor on 27 April. However, due to various “procedural complications,” he was unable to assume office.
Under Section 9 of the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009, anyone holding a full-time, paid position in the republic, a city corporation, a statutory government authority, or any other local government body is ineligible to run in a mayoral election.
