BNP candidate accused of Jamaat leader murder

A case has been filed with Jhenaigati Police Station over the killing of Maulana Rezaul Karim, Secretary of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Sreebardi Upazila unit in Sherpur, naming 231 accused and another 300-400 unidentified individuals.

The plaintiff in the case is the victim’s wife, Mosammat Marzia. The main accused in the case is Md Mahmudul Haque Rubel, the BNP-nominated candidate for the Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi-Jhenaigati) parliamentary constituency. The information was confirmed by Maulana Hafizur Rahman, Ameer of Sherpur District Jamaat-e-Islami.
Sherpur’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance), Md Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, said the case was officially recorded at Jhenaigati Police Station around midnight on Friday.

According to local sources, on 28 January in the afternoon, the Upazila administration organised an election manifesto reading programme at the Jhenaigati Upazila Mini Stadium field, involving rival candidates from the Sherpur-3 constituency. An argument reportedly broke out between activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP over seating arrangements, which later escalated into repeated clashes.

At one stage of the violence in the evening, Maulana Rezaul Karim, Secretary of Sreebardi Upazila Jamaat, was seriously injured in an attack by BNP activists at Jhenaigati Bazar. He was first taken to Jhenaigati Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Sherpur Sadar Hospital.

As his condition deteriorated, he was being taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment when he died on the way at around 9:30 pm.
Meanwhile, Sherpur District Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maulana Hafizur Rahman has demanded the swift arrest of those involved in the killing and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.
