RHD recovers Tk 50 crore govt land in N’ganj

Staff Correspondent :

The Roads and Highways Department (RHD) has recovered government land worth approximately Tk 50 crore by evicting more than fifty illegal structures along the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Narayanganj.

The eviction drive was carried out on Tuesday around 12:00 noon in the Signboard area of Siddhirganj. The operation was led by RHD Estate Officer Md. Ashfakul Haque Chowdhury.

During the drive, at least fifty illegal establishments including roadside structures built on RHD land, bus counters, bus garages, ready-made garment factories, and warehouses were demolished using bulldozers.

Officials from the Roads and Highways Department, including Sub-Divisional Engineer Ahsan Ullah Majumder of the Narayanganj Road Division, were present along with a large contingent of police, RAB, Fire Service, and DPDC personnel.

Narayanganj RHD Chief Executive Engineer Abdur Rahim confirmed the land recovery but acknowledged that conflicting allegations have emerged among the occupiers affected by the eviction.

Monir, owner of Monir Store, said the land evicted government plot LA 67-68/14 is still under a valid lease and that a writ petition (No. 7018/14) regarding the matter is pending with the High Court.

He further claimed that although both parties have writ petitions before the High Court, land under Parijat’s possession was cleared while Vertex’s land was not, calling the action questionable.

Local residents welcomed the initiative to recover government land but stressed the need for neutrality and equal application of the eviction process. They said the operation must become a genuine and impartial cleanup drive.
