Christensen returns as US ambassador

The newly appointed US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent Christensen, has pledged to deepen US-Bangladesh relations by advancing President Donald Trump’s foreign policy agenda, emphasising Washington’s commitment to strengthened diplomatic, economic and security cooperation with Dhaka.
In a statement issued by the US Embassy in Dhaka on Saturday, Ambassador Christensen said he was delighted to return to Bangladesh and lead the embassy team in reinforcing bilateral ties. He noted that his mission would focus on enhancing relations while contributing to efforts aimed at making the United States “safer, stronger and more prosperous”.
“I am thrilled to return to Bangladesh, a country I know so well,” he said, adding that he looked forward to working closely with both American and locally employed embassy staff.
“I am excited to enhance US-Bangladesh relations, advance President Trump’s agenda, and work hard every day to make America safer, stronger and more prosperous.”
The US Embassy highlighted that Ambassador Christensen brings extensive experience in South Asia and has previously served in Bangladesh, giving him a strong understanding of the country and its people.
His arrival comes at a time when the two nations are engaging on a wide range of issues, from democratic transition, visa and trade matters to regional stability and humanitarian cooperation.
The embassy said that strengthening bilateral engagement and advancing shared strategic interests would be central to Christensen’s tenure in Dhaka.
National Security Adviser (NSA) Dr Khalilur Rahman attended the ambassador’s swearing-in ceremony at the US State Department on Friday as a special invitee.
The oath was administered by Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Michael J. Rigas, who reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s democratic transition.
Ambassador Christensen reiterated US support for Bangladesh’s “journey towards a democratic future” and expressed eagerness to work with the next elected government to advance bilateral relations.
A career diplomat, Christensen has extensive experience across South and Central Asia. In addition to earlier postings in Bangladesh, he has served in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other key diplomatic assignments, giving him deep familiarity with the region’s political, economic and security dynamics.
His appointment comes at a critical moment, as the United States and Bangladesh engage in discussions on democratic transition, trade and investment, the US visa bond policy, regional stability and humanitarian cooperation, including ongoing support for Rohingya refugees.
The US Embassy said Ambassador Christensen’s term is expected to focus on expanding bilateral cooperation, strengthening people-to-people ties and advancing shared priorities in democracy, economic development and regional security.
The appointment underscores Washington’s sustained diplomatic engagement with Bangladesh as the country navigates a pivotal political and economic period.
