‘Nation seeks change in system’

Staff Correspondent :

Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Kazi Muhammad Mozammel Haque, said that in the past the government had lost its democratic legitimacy and turned into a fascist system. In line with the spirit of the 2024 movement, he said, the nation now seeks a fundamental change in that system.

He said the Honorable Chief Adviser has announced that the upcoming national election and referendum, scheduled together in 2026, will be conducted in such a way that people will remember it for the next 100 years. Through this election, a new constitution will be formulated, the benefits of which the people will enjoy for generations.

He made the remarks on Friday while speaking as the chief guest at a voter motivation meeting for the 13th National Parliamentary Election and referendum, held at the Narayanganj Sadar Upazila Parishad auditorium. The meeting was chaired by District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Md. Raihan Kabir.

Kazi Muhammad Mozammel Haque further said that for the past 15 years people had been unable to exercise their voting rights. Many have even forgotten the habit of voting. Those who became voters during this period also did not get the opportunity to vote or to understand the true importance of the ballot. Voting, he emphasized, is not only a right but also a responsibility.

The state, he said, is obligated to ensure the people’s right to representation. That right must be exercised, and no one should be allowed to deprive citizens of it. While the government has restored this right, it is also the responsibility of the people-as conscious and responsible citizens-to elect the right representatives.

He added that if citizens fail to fulfill their responsibility and elect the wrong individuals, poor governance will follow. As a result, people will suffer, and the responsibility for that will rest with the voters as well.

Regarding the election, the Additional Secretary said the authorities expect a peaceful, fair, and festive election on February 12, with the participation of people from all walks of life-an election that will be remembered from generation to generation.

The program was moderated by Sadar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sadia Akter. Among others present were Additional District Administrator (General) Md. Alamgir Hossain, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer S. M. Foyez Uddin, Sadar Upazila Engineer Yasir Arafat, and other concerned officials.

At the beginning of the event, the chief guest, Kazi Muhammad Mozammel Haque, formally launched the “Vote Info Hub” app for Narayanganj Sadar Upazila.
