Staff Reporter :

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will soon assume full responsibilities as the party’s Chairperson.

He said, “After taking on this responsibility, Tarique Rahman will begin the election campaign by visiting the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) and Shah Paran (R) in Sylhet.”

He made the remarks Sunday night during an exchange meeting with journalists working in Sylhet at an upscale hotel in the airport area of the city.

Mirza Fakhrul said, “As always, BNP will start its election campaign from Sylhet this time as well.

Within the next couple of days, Tarique Rahman will be elected as the party’s full Chairperson. Immediately after that, he will formally launch the election campaign from Sylhet.”

He added, “This election is very important for the nation, because people had been deprived of their voting rights for a long time. After many years, they have regained those rights.

As a result, there is enthusiasm among the people to cast their votes.” Referring to media concerns about the upcoming election, the BNP Secretary General said the party does not feel apprehensive. “BNP has demanded elections from the very beginning.

The election process is moving forward on its course. With everyone’s cooperation, the Election Commission will be able to hold the election,” he said.
On mob violence, he remarked, “Mobocracy destroys democracy. We must come out of this.”

Referring to the death of party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Begum Khaleda Zia departed in a regal manner through a democratic struggle.” He expressed hope that the democratic Bangladesh Khaleda Zia had envisioned would be built in the future.

Addressing political parties, the BNP Secretary General said, “Let us make use of the opportunity we have received.

Today, an opportunity has come, and we must utilize it. Democracy is not built in a day, and democratic culture does not develop overnight.”
Mirza Fakhrul reaffirmed his commitment to forming a democratic parliament.

Earlier on Sunday afternoon, Mirza Fakhrul arrived in Sylhet on a brief personal visit. After arriving, he visited the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) and Shah Paran (R).
Among those present were BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Khandaker Abdul Mukhtadir, former Sylhet mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Chairperson’s Adviser Muhammad Enamul Haque Chowdhury, Central Assistant Organizing Secretary Miftah Siddiqui, Sylhet Metropolitan BNP Acting President Rezaul Hasan Kayes Lodi, General Secretary Imdad Hossain Chowdhury, Sylhet District BNP President Abdul Qaiyum Chowdhury, General Secretary Advocate Emran Ahmed Chowdhury, along with other leaders and a large number of party activists.
