Fire at Sylhet power substation

Amidst the ongoing load shedding, a fire broke out at a 230 kV power substation in Fenchuganj under Sylhet district, and valuable equipment in the control room was burnt. It is estimated that crores of taka were lost.
The incident took place at the power generation center in the Kachuabahar area of Maijgaon Union of the upazila around 12 midnight on Thursday (October 17).
Shamsul Islam, AGM of the Fenchuganj Rural Electricity Area Office, said that a fire suddenly broke out in the switching control room of the 230 kV power substation located at Kachuabahar (Palbari) in Fenchuganj with several loud noises. Immediately, the power system was disrupted. On receiving the information, a team from the Fenchuganj Fire Brigade reached the spot and was able to bring the fire under control after several hours of effort. The valuable equipment in the control room was burnt in the fire.
The extent of the damage was not immediately known. However, officials estimate that the damage will be in crores of taka. It is said that the fire started from an electrical short circuit.
In this incident, the entire area of Fenchuganj upazila of Sylhet district, Osmaninagar, Golapganj, Balaganj upazila and Rajnagar area of Moulvibazar district were cut off for about 8 hours. As a result, 1.5 million people in this region spent the night in darkness.
The residents of the affected areas suffered greatly. However, Rural Electricity officials said that power supply was normal in some areas as of this morning till the writing of this report.
