Fair, participatory election only option for nation: CEC

Staff Reporter :

The current Election Commission (EC) assumed office during a critical period and has committed to ensuring a free, fair, and participatory national election, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin said on Monday.

“This election is not only vital for the Election Commission but also for the entire nation,” the CEC told representatives of electronic and print media at the EC headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Media experts have warned that combating AI-driven disinformation and rumours will be a significant challenge for the Election Commission (EC) ahead of the upcoming national election.

They urged the EC to ensure the swift dissemination of accurate information to mainstream media, emphasizing that timely and reliable updates are crucial to counter the spread of misinformation and maintain public trust in the electoral process.

Addressing journalists, Nasir emphasized the role of the media in shaping public opinion:
“We cannot conduct the national election alone—it must be organised nationally. Every report and piece of news you produce is important for democracy and the polls. You are the shapers of public opinion, and we want to make the best use of that.”

Since taking office, the EC has been preparing for a credible and participatory election. Steps taken include removing nearly 2.1 million deceased voters from the electoral roll and adding 4.4 million new voters.

Notably, the number of female voters has increased significantly, reflecting a positive trend in voter registration.

The CEC also highlighted measures to safeguard the voting rights of expatriates and officials on duty. While the law permits postal ballots, the system had been ineffective in previous elections.

This time, steps are being taken to ensure its proper implementation. Additionally, the EC plans to introduce an online registration system for expatriate Bangladeshis to participate in the election.
Stressing the importance of restoring public confidence, Nasir said:
“People must understand the importance of voting and regain faith in the electoral process. If everyone works together, it is possible to create a festive atmosphere during the election.”
The CEC’s remarks underscore the EC’s commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and public trust as it prepares for the upcoming national polls.
