Candidates Gear Up in Tangail Ahead of 13th National Polls
District Correspondent, Tangail:
With the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections scheduled for early February 2026, political activities in Tangail, a politically significant district near Dhaka, have intensified. Following the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024, the political landscape has shifted dramatically.
With AL banned and many of its leaders either imprisoned or in hiding, BNP has taken a lead role, alongside Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolon Bangladesh, NCP, and other Islamist and nationalist groups.
Across all 8 constituencies—Tangail-1 to Tangail-8—BNP has multiple nomination seekers. Internal factionalism is evident, yet active campaign efforts are underway. Key figures like Sultan Salahuddin Tuku in Tangail-5, Advocate Abdus Salam Pintu in Tangail-2, and several central BNP leaders are meeting grassroots voters.
Jamaat-e-Islami has fielded single candidates in every seat, with Islami Andolon, NCP, and other smaller parties also actively organizing public events. In Tangail-8, veteran leader Bangabir Kader Siddiqui’s presence adds competitive momentum. As per the District Election Commission, the total number of registered voters stands at 3.3 million, with nearly equal male and female distribution.
BNP’s Tuku stated, “Our candidates are well-positioned. People want change after years of oppression. If the election is free and fair, BNP will sweep Tangail.” Jamaat’s local leader Ahsan Habib Masud echoed the sentiment: “People are responding positively. We are campaigning with hope and purpose.”
Despite challenges, political observers believe the upcoming election may mark a pivotal shift in Tangail’s political direction.
