Jamaat to donate Tk1cr to hospital
Staff Reporter :
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader and intending candidate for Dhaka-17 Dr SM Khaliduzzaman has announced a donation of Tk 1 crore for the development of the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICRH), the country’s largest state-run facility for cancer treatment.
Speaking at a human chain in front of the hospital on Monday Dr Khaliduzzaman alleged that the institute has been crippled by corruption, syndicate influence, and political interference, depriving patients of timely treatment and putting lives at risk.
“Seven radiotherapy machines are installed here, but only two are functioning while five remain out of order. How will patients receive treatment?” he asked.
He further alleged that irregularities span from recruitment to administrative management. “During the 17 years of fascist rule, promotions were granted by allowing one person to write another’s life story. Discrimination was rampant in the promotion and recruitment of doctors, nurses, technologists, and administrators. People from a particular district were specially recruited to the hospital,” he claimed.
According to him, staff quarters have been occupied by outsiders, while syndicates control appointment queues. He also pointed out that the hospital lacks essential equipment such as MRI, CT scan, and nanogram machines. “Even the blood bank still runs manually-it must be digitised. Public health cannot be held hostage like this,” he said.
Dr Khaliduzzaman cited Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman’s pledge to root out corruption from the health sector. “Our leader declared that we will not commit corruption, we will not tolerate corruption, and we will fight corruption. Under his guidance, we cancelled the irregular appointment of 65 doctors at the children’s hospital. If we form the next government, we will eliminate all forms of corruption from the health sector,” he said.
“Our health sector itself is cancer-stricken. I only presented a fraction of the corruption in this hospital. Patients who come here in hope should not leave in despair. We want to transform this hospital into a modern, corruption-free institution truly serving the people,” he said.
