Home Adviser urges civil service neutrality

Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has called on civil servants to maintain political neutrality and uphold the highest standards of professionalism.

Addressing an orientation and training programme for newly appointed first and second secretaries to the passport and visa wings of Bangladesh missions abroad, he underlined that impartiality is essential for smooth administration and public trust. The event was held at the Ministry of Home Affairs, with Senior Secretary Nasimul Ghani attending as special guest.

“The civil service must remain dedicated, professional, and free from political influence. Officials must avoid corruption and must not act as affiliates of any political party,” Chowdhury said.

He also urged officials posted to foreign missions to serve with a sense of responsibility and public service. “Expatriates are a driving force of Bangladesh’s economy. They sustain the country through remittances, and many belong to the labour sector,” he noted, stressing the importance of treating them with respect and providing efficient services.

The Home Adviser emphasised that officials must also foster harmonious working relationships within embassies and missions to maintain a constructive environment. He warned that any action undermining the dignity or reputation of Bangladesh would not be tolerated.

Chowdhury’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts to reinforce professionalism and integrity in the civil service, particularly among staff serving abroad, ensuring that Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions reflect the country’s values and commitment to service.
