Concerns are growing among Bangladesh’s writers and publishers over the fate of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2026, with many fearing that the upcoming national election, likely to be held before Ramadan in February, and the prevailing political uncertainty could disrupt the country’s largest literary event.
Traditionally held throughout February, the annual month-long fair is a cultural highlight that draws hundreds of publishers, authors, and thousands of visitors to the Bangla Academy grounds and adjacent areas.
However, as the holy month of Ramadan expected to begin on February 17-18 next year and the general election anticipated just days earlier, many in the publishing industry believe that sticking to the usual schedule could lead to logistical and security challenges, lower attendance, and financial losses for participating publishers, reports UNB.
In a recent Facebook post, prominent author and publisher Mohammad Nazimuddin urged the Bangla Academy and the country’s publishers to immediately determine the fair’s dates.
