Workshop on developing roadmap for NSIS held
Business Desk :
A workshop aimed at formulating a comprehensive roadmap for the implementation of the National Social Insurance Scheme (NSIS) was held in Gazipur recently.
The scheme seeks to enhance social security coverage for workers across Bangladesh.
Organised by the International Labour Organization (ILO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Australian Aid, and RAPID, the event brought together key stakeholders from government agencies, employers’ associations, and development partners at the BRAC CDM office in Rajendrapur, Gazipur, reports BSS.
AHM Shafiquzzaman, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, attended the event as the chief guest.
In his address, he noted that Bangladesh is already undertaking a range of initiatives to eliminate child labour, working in coordination with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, and various non-governmental organizations.
He emphasized the need to strengthen the country’s institutional framework to bring both formal and informal sector workers under a sustainable social protection system.
Highlighting the importance of transparency, he called for the rapid digitalization of services provided by the Bangladesh Workers’ Welfare Foundation and the Central Fund.
Shafiquzzaman also suggested that Bangladesh should explore higher tax collection rates, similar to Scandinavian models, to finance long-term social security initiatives.
