Sohag’s murder rooted in business feud, not extortion: Police
NN Online:
Police have confirmed that the killing of scrap metal trader Lal Chand, alias Sohag, in front of Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka stemmed from a business dispute—not extortion, as initially suspected.
The clarification came during a press briefing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Centre on Saturday, where Lalbagh Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Jasim Uddin said preliminary investigations revealed tensions over control of a shop in the scrap metal trade.
“The victim and the accused were related and had prior business dealings. A dispute over financial transactions and ownership escalated into violence,” DC Jasim stated.
Sohag was brutally attacked and killed around 6:00pm on July 9 near Gate 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital. Kotwali Police responded quickly and brought the situation under control.
The following day, Sohag’s elder sister filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station. His body was sent for autopsy, and a post-mortem report was prepared.
A series of arrests followed:
July 11: Police apprehended Mahmudul Hasan Mohin (41) and Tarique Rahman Robin (22), recovering a foreign-made pistol from Robin.
Same day: RAB arrested Alamgir (28) and Monir alias Chhota Monir (25) for their alleged involvement.
July 12 (Friday night): Kotwali Police detained Md. Titon Gazi (32).
DC Jasim said a special investigative team has been assigned to the case to fully uncover the motive, trace remaining suspects, and ensure justice is served.
“Police are analysing CCTV footage, following leads, and conducting continuous raids to arrest all involved,” he added.
