UNESCO representative meets information adviser Mahfuj Alam

UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh Sue Vize met with Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam on Wednesday at his office in the Secretariat.

During the meeting, Adviser Mahfuj highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to reform the media sector. According to an official press release, a taskforce will soon be formed to overhaul the newspaper circulation audit system.

He also revealed that an ordinance aimed at protecting journalistic rights is in the final stages and will be issued shortly. “We hope to implement several other media reform initiatives in the coming months,” Mahfuj added.

Addressing media freedom, the adviser stated that the government does not exert any pressure on media outlets and that news dissemination remains fully independent in Bangladesh.

He further mentioned that discussions are underway with media houses and stakeholders to introduce a code of conduct for newspapers and journalists.

UNESCO International Consultant Lena Fox was also present at the meeting.
