Indefinite transport strike in Sylhet from Tuesday

Sylhet Bureau :
Transport leaders have called for an indefinite transport strike in Sylhet from next Tuesday (July 8) with 5-point demands including opening all stone quarries in Sylhet and stopping harassment of transport workers. The announcement was made by District Transport Owners-Workers Association President Moinul Islam at 3 pm on Sunday (July 6).

Earlier, he said that the decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the Transport Owners-Workers Unity Council on Saturday (July 5).

Transport workers leader Moinul said that there will be no picketing during the strike. No vehicles will be vandalized. We will observe a peaceful strike at home.

He also said that vehicles related to the transport of HSC examinees, foreign passengers and patients will be outside the scope of the strike.

Earlier, a meeting of bus, truck and CNG-powered auto-rickshaw workers’ organizations was held at the Sylhet District Transport Owners’ Association office on Saturday. Transport leaders said that all organizations agreed on this decision in the meeting.

On Sunday afternoon, District Transport Owners-Workers Association President Mainul Islam said that the Deputy Commissioner is causing difficulties in various ways, including closing the brick kiln, so the issue of our objection to him is also on Tuesday’s program.

He said that stone quarries are not only related to businessmen. Hundreds of truck workers are related to stone quarries. This involves the financial issues of the owners and workers. Truck workers earn a living by transporting stones from the quarries. Why are the workers being deprived of this? All stone quarries must be opened immediately.
Earlier, the workers started a 48-hour goods transport strike from 6 am on Saturday with five demands, including the removal of the Sylhet Deputy Commissioner and the opening of all stone quarries. The Sylhet District Road Transport Owners-Workers Unity Council started this strike. This strike continued for the second day on Sunday. This has completely stopped the movement of trucks, lorries and covered vans on Sylhet and inter-district roads across the country.

The transport workers’ 5-point demands include opening all stone quarries in Sylhet, stopping the stone crusher machine demolition campaign, not seizing stone-laden trucks, stopping harassment and torture of drivers, stopping harassing behavior towards workers at the BRTA office, and removing the Sylhet Deputy Commissioner.
