Heavy rains cause waterlogging in Sylhet city

Waterlogging has occurred across Sylhet city due to continuous rains under the influence of monsoon winds. 156 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in the city from 12 noon to 3 pm on Saturday (May 31).
According to the Water Development Board, although the water of the Surma River was flowing 149 centimeters below the danger level in Sylhet city until 3 pm, the city’s drains, canals and gutters have overflowed and flooded a large area.
The city’s Amberkhana-Bimanbandar main road, Sylhet Railway Station and other important roads and structures have been waterlogged. In addition, reports of waterlogging have been received from various areas of the city including Hawapara, Jalalabad, Pathantula, Chowhatta, Zindabazar, Bandarbazar, Tilagarh, Majortila, Shahparan.
Sylhet City Corporation Chief Engineer Nur Azizur Rahman said, “Due to heavy rainfall in a very short period of time, temporary waterlogging has occurred in various areas of the city. However, as the rain has stopped, the water is receding rapidly. Except for a few places like the Alia Madrasa field, the water has receded in most places.”
He also said that Sylhet City Corporation has already formed a control room to monitor and control the waterlogging situation.
Meanwhile, the water level in Gowainghat Upazila of Sylhet district has increased due to the hilly slope and heavy rain, but there has been no flood situation. However, due to the slope, traffic movement has been limited on the causeway of the Gowainghat-Radhanagar road, said Ratan Kumar Adhikari, Upazila Executive Officer of Gowainghat.
In addition, the water level in the rivers of Companiganj, Jaintapur, Zakiganj and Kanaighat Upazilas has increased rapidly due to the hilly slope, but it has not yet crossed the danger level.
