Former JnU prof Anwara arrested in uprising case

NN Online:
Freedom fighter and former Jagannath University (JnU) professor Anwara Begum Anu has been arrested in connection with a murder case filed during a recent mass uprising.

Police confirmed she will be presented before the court on Thursday (May 29). The arrest occurred around 7:30 PM on Wednesday (May 28) near the university campus after students reportedly handed her over to authorities.

Sutrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Saiful Islam stated that students had detained Anwara Begum in front of the campus and contacted the police. “We responded and brought her to the station. She has been formally arrested and will be produced in court today,” he said.

The case was filed in February this year by Sujan Molla, former general secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) JnU unit.

Anwara Begum previously served as a professor in JnU’s Political Science Department and is a former member of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC). She currently serves as a nominee on the university’s Upgradation Board.

According to Anwara, she had been summoned to the university by an official letter from the registrar’s office.

However, JnU Proctor Professor Dr. Muhammad Tajammul Haque claimed the university administration was unaware of her visit. “We had no prior knowledge of either her presence on campus or any case filed against her. To my knowledge, the police arrested her outside the campus premises,” he told Jago News.
