Staff Reporter :
Bangladesh’s garment industry has transshipped more than 34,900 tonnes of apparel products worth $462.34 million through India to 36 countries in 15 months.
The exports, spanning from January 2024 to March 2025, included a wide range of clothing items such as blouses, trousers, T-shirts, and baby garments. Key markets included the United States, European Union nations like Germany and France, and Asian destinations such as Japan and South Korea.
The shipments were routed through India as part of regional trade facilitation. The total export value stood at Tk 5,640.5 crore, according to trade data shared by Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.
The United Arab Emirates, Australia, and Canada were among the top non-EU importers, while South Africa and Chile also featured prominently.
Industry analysts attribute the volume of business to Bangladesh’s competitive manufacturing costs and India’s strategic transshipment infrastructure.
On April 8, India abruptly cancelled the transhipment route for Bangladesh, disrupting an export route for some local exporters.
Bangladesh exported about $36 billion of garments in the 2023-24 fiscal year. Economists and industrialists believe that the recently cancels transshipment by the india , Bangladesh will not suffer much.
According to them, Bangladesh exports very little using transshipment, which is less than 1 percent of its total exports.
However, it will have to deal with this through a cool-headed diplomatic path.
