Committee formed to review quota in govt. jobs

Staff Reporter :

The Ministry of Public Administration has formed an 11-member committee to review the implementation process of the quota system and provide recommendations.
The ministry issued an official order to this effect on Tuesday.

The committee will be led by the Additional Secretary (Regulations) of the Ministry of Public Administration, with the Deputy Secretary (Regulations-1) serving as the member secretary.

Other members include representatives at the Joint Secretary level from the Prime Minister’s Office, Cabinet Division, Finance Division, Ministry of Social Welfare, Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, Health Services Division, Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, Public Service Commission, and the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.

The committee has been instructed to submit a recommendation report within 30 working days.
Last year, student protests demanding quota reform led to conflicts and clashes in various parts of the country, including Dhaka. At one point, the quota reform movement transformed into a one point movement demanding the resignation of Sheikh Hasina government.

Earlier, on July 23, the previous government, following a verdict from the Appellate Division, issued a gazette notification determining the quota system.

According to the notification, 93pc of direct recruitment in government, semi-government, and autonomous institutions would be based on merit, while the remaining positions would be allocated for specific groups as per the existing policy.

This quota system remains in place. Following the fall of the fascist Awami League government, an interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus was formed. Now, seven and a half months after assuming office, the interim government has established this committee to review the quota system.
