BASA demands action for attacking govt official
Staff reporter :
The Bangladesh Administrative Service Association (BASA), a non-political organisation representing members of the BCS (Administration) cadre, has strongly condemned the violent attack on a senior government official during an anti-polythene drive in Dhaka.
The organization held a press conference in Dhaka in this regard on Wednesday.
According to the press conference, on January 26, 2025, at around noon, a mobile court operation was underway in Chawkbazar to enforce the ban on illegal polythene shopping bags.
During the raid, Mr. Mohammad Shawkat Ali, Director of the Monitoring and Enforcement Wing of the Department of Environment and a Deputy Secretary to the Government, was brutally assaulted and seriously injured by a group of miscreants allegedly incited by illegal polythene manufacturers and sellers.
BASA strongly condemns this outrageous attack and demands swift legal action against those responsible. The association expresses deep concern over the safety of government officials enforcing the law and urges the authorities to ensure strict punishment for the attackers.
In light of this incident, BASA is calling on the government to launch a special crackdown on the illegal production and distribution of polythene in Old Dhaka, particularly in Chawkbazar. The association also demands enhanced security for Department of Environment officials during future mobile court operations to prevent such assaults.
BASA extends its deepest sympathies to the injured official and his family, wishing him a speedy recovery.
