International Education day today: A day to recognise education as fundamental right

Education Reporter :

International Day of Education is observed annually on January 24 to recognize the pivotal role education plays in fostering peace, development, and equality worldwide.

The day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, affirming education as a fundamental human right and a critical tool for achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This date was chosen to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, which enshrines education as a universal right in Article 26. The declaration underscores that everyone is entitled to free and compulsory elementary education and that education should promote understanding, tolerance, and friendship among nations.

It reinforces the belief that education is the foundation for breaking cycles of poverty, reducing inequalities, and promoting sustainable development. The day focuses on challenges like unequal access to education, gender disparities, and learning disruptions caused by conflicts and emergencies.

Stakeholders from governments, educational institutions, NGOs, and individuals are encouraged to collaborate to improve access to quality education globally.

Each year, the International Day of Education is celebrated under a specific theme. In 2025, the focus is on “Empowering Learning for a Sustainable Future,” emphasising innovation in education systems and equitable access to learning opportunities for all.

Governments, schools, and organizations around the world mark the occasion with seminars, workshops, cultural events, and policy discussions to inspire actions that strengthen education systems and reach marginalised communities.

UNESCO reports that 244 million children and youth worldwide are still out of school, and many more lack access to quality learning. Observing this day reminds the global community of its responsibility to uphold the right to education and ensure that no one is left behind.

As the world celebrates International Day of Education on January 24, the message is clear: education is not just a tool for individual growth but a cornerstone for collective progress and a better future for all.
