Govt renames 13 varsities named after Sheikh family

Out of the 55 government universities in the country, 13 were previously named after members of the family of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted from power.
These universities have now been renamed, with most adopting the names of the districts in which they are located.
On Thursday (January 16), the Ministry of Education presented the proposal to rename these universities to the interim government’s advisory council, where it was approved.
The Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education confirmed this decision and announced that an official notification would be issued soon.
Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiya and Labor and Employment Adviser Asif Nazrul also confirmed the news through posts on their respective verified Facebook pages.
Among the 13 universities, two were named after Sheikh Hasina, nine after Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and two after Fazilatun Nesa Mujib. The new names of the universities are as follows:
Sheikh Hasina University in Netrokona is now Netrokona University.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University in Kishoreganj is now Kishoreganj University. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University in Naogaon is now Naogaon University. Mujibnagar University in Meherpur is now Meherpur University.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University in Gazipur is now Gazipur Agricultural University. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University in Shariatpur is now Shariatpur Agricultural University.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University in Gazipur is now Bangladesh Digital University. Sheikh Fazilatun Nesa Mujib Science and Technology University in Jamalpur is now Jamalpur Science and Technology University. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University in Pirojpur is now Pirojpur Science and Technology University.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University in Narayanganj is now Narayanganj Science and Technology University. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University in Gopalganj is now Gopalganj Science and Technology University.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University in Chattogram is now Maritime University Bangladesh. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University of Aviation and Aerospace is now Aviation and Aerospace University.
This decision marks a significant step by the interim government to align university names with their geographical locations and reduce political affiliations.
