Sylhet Bureau :
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam said, returning the enthusiasm of the police in the post-revolution period is now a big challenge. We are working towards that goal.
He told reporters after a meeting with officers of various police units working in Sylhet division on Saturday (December 21) afternoon.
Expressing regret over the death of Sylhet journalist Turab in police firing during the student-public movement the IGP said, the police commissioner will work seriously in the Turab murder case.
Journalist Turab died in our firing while performing his professional duties. He cannot be brought back. We have no other option but to apologize.
At the same time, the IGP requested the Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police to complete the trial of Turab’s murder in a fair manner.
The IGP also said the police are currently in a state of dismay. Their hearts are broken with fear. In the mass uprising, senior police officers have ordered juniors to flee, leaving them unsafe.
He said, we are ashamed of the fact that in the past, the police have committed major crimes to protect party interests.
The IGP said, in the changed environment of the July Revolution, unscrupulous people have taken advantage of the case. Innocent people who have been accused will not be arrested. To avoid harassment, they will be reassured by the police after searching.
Regarding the attacks, threats and extortion on various business establishments after August 5, he said, if anyone comes to you asking for extortion, do not give extortion to anyone, do not be afraid.
We are with the businessmen at all times. The police are always working to maintain an environment so that businessmen can conduct their business activities smoothly.
Stating that the Police Reform Commission has been formed to restore people’s trust in the police, the IGP said adding we have recommended some specific issues to the commission. Especially, most of the police members have to work overtime.
They do not get any allowance for this.
We are working on this issue. We are also trying to solve their problems to bring back their enthusiasm for work. Today we will listen to them together.
RAB Director General Additional IGP AKM Shahidur Rahman, Sylhet Range DIG Md. Mushfequr Rahman, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Rezaul Karim and officials from all police departments were present in the exchange of views meeting.
