Bangladesh is bracing for a harsh winter as a combination of cold air from the Himalayas, dense fog, and water vapor from the Bay of Bengal blankets much of the country.

With temperatures already plummeting, the meteorological department warns that the biting cold could persist throughout December.

In regions like Gopalganj and Chuadanga, the temperature has dipped alarmingly close to the cold wave threshold, with mercury levels expected to drop even further over the coming days.

Forecasters predict the cold wave will gradually extend from the northern regions to the southwestern parts of the country within the next two days.

Currently, daylight is limited to just a few hours each day due to persistent dense fog, exacerbating the chilly conditions.

The meteorological department has also indicated that this winter might be colder compared to previous years, with potentially severe implications for the vulnerable population.

People in the northern districts, including Rangpur, are already struggling to cope with the cold. Thick fog in areas like Chilarjhar has significantly reduced visibility, disrupting daily life and transportation.

Authorities are urging citizens to take necessary precautions, especially for children, the elderly, and those with preexisting health conditions. Charitable organizations and local governments are preparing to distribute warm clothing and provide aid to mitigate the hardships caused by the cold wave.

As the cold sets in, experts caution that the prolonged winter may impact agriculture and livestock, calling for proactive measures to minimize damage.
