Dengue claims 5 more lives, 570 hospitalised

Mosquito borne dengue disease claimed five more lives in 24 hours till this morning (5 December), raising the number of fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 514 this year.
During the period, 570 more patients were hospitalised with the viral fever, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Experts suggested more efforts and research for combating the dengue immediately.
When contacted, eminent public health expert Dr. Lenin Chowdhury told The New Nation on Thursday, “There are no sufficient efforts to erase Aedes mosquito which is responsible for spreading dengue fever among the people.”
The expert also pointed that there are no sufficient research on the breedings and behavour change of the Aedes mosquito. He suggested immediate strong measures on the issues to make the people safe from the mosquito born diseases like dengue and chikunguniya.
The DGHS data showed that among the infected people, 99 dengue patients were hospitalised in Dhaka North City, 98 in Dhaka South City, 138 in Dhaka division (outside of city corporations), 34 in Rajshahi division, 54 in Barishal division, 47 in Chattogram division, 64 in Khulna division, 17 in Mymensingh division, one in Rangpur division and two in Sylhet division.
Meanwhile, 627 dengue patients have been discharged from hospitals across the country in last 24 hours. With this, a total of 92,001 people have been discharged this year.
Last year, dengue claimed the lives of 1,705 people, making it the deadliest year on record.
According to DGHS, there were 3,21,179 dengue cases and 3,18,749 recoveries in 2023.
