BGB does not know how AL ministers, MPs escaped country: DG

Staff Reporter :

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General (DG) Maj Gen Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui said a total of 22 Awami League leaders and activists, who were against the Anti-Discrimination Movement, have been arrested.

However, a large number of AL leaders and activists fled the country through different borders, regarding which BGB has no idea, said the BGB chief on Thursday.

In this regard, Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui said, ‘Did everyone run away? I don’t think so. Some are hiding in this populous country. BGB has conducted several operations to catch a drug dealer who is widely known as drug mastermind Bodi. It was heard that he went to Myanmar in a trawler. But he was arrested from Sitakunda.

The DG said that a request had been made on 6 August to aid the BGB in curbing escapes through the border, an initiative that was undertaken independently and without any external directive. “We have been working on this continuously. If all organisations that collect intelligence share their information, our efforts would be far more effective,” he said.

He further said, “I don’t know how they fled the country, for this investigation must be conducted. I also want to question why BGB alone will be responsible for this AL leaders’ escape.”

Maj Gen Siddiqui made the remark while talking at a press conference organized at the conference hall of the BGB in the capital.

Mr. Siddiqui said, “Definitely BGB cannot evade liabilities of this incident, but the force can’t solely be held responsible for this incident.”

“Which leaders crossed which border, must be investigated strongly,” he added.

He urged the journalists and said, “You also have information.” You can inform BGB. We will take necessary action. We are determined to prevent escape.’
The DG reiterated that the BGB is dedicated to fulfilling its role in safeguarding the borders and that all stakeholders must collaborate to address the ongoing issue effectively.
