UGC urges students to go by SC order
Staff Reporter :
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a directive to Vice-Chancellors (VCs) of all public and private universities in Bangladesh, as well as protesting students, to adhere to the recent order from the Appellate Division regarding agitation over quota-related issues.
Following the Appellate Division’s decision to maintain status quo for four weeks on a High Court verdict concerning the reinstatement of a 30 percent quota for descendants of freedom fighters in civil service
recruitment, students nationwide have continued their movement seeking reforms in the government job quota system.
In its written order, the Appellate Division has urged the protesting students to return to their academic activities and instructed educational institution heads to ensure a conducive environment on campuses.
The court has also suggested that students present their demands through legal channels, promising to consider their arguments while resolving pending petitions on the issue.
On Thursday, the UGC issued a formal notice to all university VCs, emphasizing compliance with the Supreme Court’s directives to restore educational normalcy amidst ongoing protests.
The call from the UGC underscores efforts to maintain academic continuity while addressing students’ concerns through legal frameworks.
