Police ASI jailed for torturing wife, demanding dowry

A Barishal court has sentenced an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) to two years imprisonment for torturing wife demanding dowry. Besides, the accused was fined Tk. 10 thousand.
Convicted Isha Khan is the son of deceased Yasin Khan of Shehakathi village of Patuakhali Sadar Upazila. He was working as ASI of Kaltalir Char Police Investigation Center of Bhola district.
Currently, Isha Khan has been temporarily suspended according to an order of the Bhola District Police. Convicted Isha Khan was present in the court during the pronouncement of the verdict.
Bench Assistant Kazi Humayun Kabir said Yarb Hossain, judge of the Barishal tribunal for prevention of torture against women and children, handed down the verdict on Monday afternoon in presence of the accused after examining nine witnesses and arguments of both sides.
The brief story of the case was in 2017, the accused got married to Shahnaz Afroz, daughter of deceased Golam Mustafa, a resident of Kashipur area of Barishal.
At the time of marriage, he was given Tk. two and a half lakh as dowry. Even after that, he tortured his wife by demanding dowry of Tk. 5 lakh. Wife Shahnaz Parveen miscarried her pregnancy due to torture of ASI Isha Khan.
Then on January 1, 2020, the victim filed a case in the Women and Child Abuse Crime Prevention Tribunal. The bench assistant said that Isha Khan has been sent to jail on the warrant.
