Amidst the recent surge in temperatures, not only have records been shattered, but a troubling spike in heat-related illnesses has also swept across the nation.

As the mercury relentlessly climbs, health authorities are sounding the alarm, urging residents to take proactive measures to safeguard their well-being.

In the past week, hospitals and medical centers have witnessed a notable surge in patients grappling with heat-related ailments, including heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration. Emergency rooms find themselves stretched to their limits, contending with the influx of cases spurred by the unyielding grip of the heatwave.

Dr. Kasedul Islam Nayan, an esteemed Assistant Surgeon, shared his profound concerns regarding the escalating situation with The New Nation.

“The intensity and duration of this heatwave are unparalleled,” he remarked.
Dr. Nayan emphasized the alarming uptick in heat-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable demographics such as the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Dr. Nayan, also shed light on the intricate mechanisms underlying heat stroke-related diarrhea, attributing it in part to the body’s stress response.

He elucidated how prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures prompts the release of hormones like cortisol, instigating alterations in digestion and absorption that may culminate in loose stools or diarrhea.

Amidst the scorching temperatures, public health officials have issued advisories, urging residents to prioritize hydration, minimize sun exposure, and seek solace in air-conditioned sanctuaries whenever feasible.

Additionally, they stress the significance of checking on elderly neighbors and relatives, and ensuring pets are kept indoors and adequately hydrated.
