Massive fire breaks out at sugar refinery in Ctg

A massive fire broke out at the warehouse of S Alam Refined Sugar Mills in the Isanagar area of Karnaphuli upazila in Chattogram around 3:55pm Monday (4 March).
Confirming the incident, Shoaib Hossain Munshi, warehouse inspector of Karnaphuli Fire Station, said upon receiving information around 18 units of firefighters rushed to the spot and were working to control the blaze.
He also said no loss of life has been reported yet but extensive damage has been done.
An ambulance was called as there might be some injuries.
It is not yet known how the fire started. Details will be known after an investigation, he added.
Besides, a firefighting unit of Coast Guard has joined the team who are trying to douse the fire broke out at a sugar mill.
Officer-in-Charge of Karnaphuli Thana Johir Hossain said the fire was not brought under control till the report writing. Meanwhile, due to this incident, approximate one lakh tons of unrefined sugar in the factory has been burnt, the concerned claim.
The assistant fitter of the factory, Monir, said that there was about 100,000 tons of unrefined sugar in that warehouse. These were burnt.
According to mill officials, the fire started in one of the six godowns of the sugar mill. Imported raw sugar was stored there. They fear that the fire may spread to other godowns due to the increase in intensity of the fire.
