366 killed, 464 injured in Sylhet road mishap last year

The Sylhet department has released the report on road accidents in the recently concluded year 2023, Seeking Safer Roads (NISCHA). In 2023, 366 people were killed and 464 injured in 294 road accidents in Sylhet division. Among them, 159 people were killed and 144 people were injured in 112 road accidents in Sylhet district. 48 people were killed and 49 injured in 37 road accidents in Sunamganj district. 41 people were killed and 68 injured in 39 road accidents in Moulvibazar district. 118 people were killed and 203 injured in 106 road accidents in Habiganj district.
According to Nischa report, the number of dead and injured in road accidents in Sylhet division has increased from 2022 to 2023. In 2022, 337 people were killed and 435 injured in 286 road accidents in Sylhet division.
Zahirul Islam Mishu, Co-Organizing Secretary of Nischa Central Committee and Member Secretary of Sylhet-Chittagong Divisional Committee, said in a statement sent to the media, based on the information of 11 national daily newspapers, electronic media, online newspapers, presumed unpublished or unpublished incidents and reports of Nischa branch organizations every year. Nyaya has prepared a report on Nischa road accidents this year as well. In the report, lack of proper management and monitoring on roads, non-implementation of 111 recommendations given by Taskforce, competition among drivers and tendency to drive recklessly, overtaking by breaking traffic laws, hiring drivers without license, lack of awareness among pedestrians, non-use of seat belts, Driving for long hours without breaks, drug addiction of drivers, construction defects on highways, lack of child seats in vehicles, increase in motorcycles and three-wheelers on roads and highways.
