7,902 killed in road accidents in 2023

As many as 7,902 people died and 10,372 others were injured in 6,261 road accidents across the country in the year 2023, according to the latest report of the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS).

Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, Secretary General of the BJKS, unveiled the report at a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital’s Segunbagicha at 11:30am on Sunday.

The report said that 2,152 people were killed in 2,031 motorcycle accidents across the country – 32.43% of the total deaths.

Meanwhile, in 2023, a total of 512 people were killed and 475 others injured in 520 railways accidents while 91 people were killed, 152 others injured and 109 remained missing in the 148 waterways accidents.

Besides, a total of 8,505 people were killed and 10,999 injured in a total of 6,929 accidents on roads, railways and waterways.

The fatalities included 1,950 drivers, 968 pedestrians, 485 transport workers, 697 students, 97 teachers, 154 law enforcement officers, 985 women, 612 children, 30 journalists, 32 doctors, 16 freedom fighters, eight lawyers, 10 engineers, and 111 political activists.

The BJKS published the annual report, prepared on the basis of different media reports.
