Post-poll violence: Hundreds of houses vandalised, 50 injured in country

At least hundreds houses were vandalized and 50 more people were injured in post-polls violence across country on Monday.

In Jhenaidah, at least 10 people were injured and 50 houses vandalised as the supporters of the winning independent candidate from Jhenaidah-2 Naser Shahriar Zahedi attacked defeated AL candidate Tahjib Alam Siddiquai’s supporters houses in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila on Monday.

After getting the result of 12th parliamentary polls, the supporters of Naser Shahriar Zahedi attacked on Barikhali, Hiradanga, and Surapara villages under the upazila at around 11am on Monday, confirmed Shaheen Uddin, officer-in-charge of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station.

Additional police were deployed in the areas. Further legal action will be taken if the victims file complaints, OC added.

After the announcement of the polls’ results, there was tension in the three villages.

In this regard, defeated AL candidate Tahjib Alom Siddiquai said at least 10 people, including a woman, were injured and at least 50 houses were vandilised and looted by the attackers.

In Madaripur, at least tenpeople were injured after the rivals reportedly carried out bomb attacks on a victory procession of winning independent candidate Tahmina Begum at Fasiatala in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur district on Monday.

Of the injured, six were taken to Kalkini Upazila Health Complex from where two were shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

Sarkar Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Kalkini Police Station, said police are trying to arrest the attackers.

Additional police forces were deployed in the area to avert further trouble.

In Munshiganj, at least five people, including a child, were injured after the supports of independent candidate Mohammad Faisal, who won the Munshiganj-3 constituency, reportedly attacked the house of one of the supporters of AL candidate on Monday morning.

The injured are woman Riya Akhter, 30, Md Shamim, 32, Imu Akhter, 18, Yana, 13, and Hosne Ara, 32.

In Rajshahi, at least 20 people were injured in a clash between supporters of an independent candidate and policemen in Tanore of Rajshahi.

In Jamalpur, at least 10 people were injured in clashes between the supporters of boat and truck symbols in Sarishabari of Jamalpur district.

In Cumilla, at least four people, including an Awami League polling agent, were injured after the rivals reportedly attacked them in Rajamehar union of Debidwer upazila of Cumilla district on Sunday night.

The injured were AL agent Billal Hossain, his sister-in-law Rina, Shahjahan, and Sayeed.
