Police box attacked in Dhanmondi
Staff Reporter :
At least two policemen were injured after a group of battery-run rickshaw-pullers attacked a police box in city’s Dhanmondi area on Tuesday afternoon.
Three suspects have been detained in this connection.
The injured persons have been identified as sub-inspector Khabir and constable Nasibuzzaman. After the incident, they were rushed to a private hospital for treatment.
Dhanmondi Police Station’s in-charge Parvez Islam confirmed the matter to the media saying that several hundred battery-run rickshaw pullers yesterday brought out a procession and suddenly vandalized the traffic police box on Satmasjid Road in the capital.
Battery-run rickshaws are not allowed to ply on the streets in Dhaka.
The rickshaw pullers were furious when policemen stopped them from plying on the main roads in Dhanamondi and Mohammadpur areas, the OC said.
Meanwhile, a few rickshaw pullers complained of taking bribes by police from them for allowing their vehicles to ply on the main roads.
The agitated drivers said that they mainly drive battery-run rickshaws from night to dawn.
In many cases, traffic police take bribes and let them drive on the main road, alleged the drivers, adding that if rickshaw pullers refuse to give bribes, the police harass them.
