Domestic help dies in Banasree

Staff Reporter  :
Agitated people set three vehicles on fire inside the garage of a residence in the capital’s Banasree area following the death of a domestic help.

The incident took place at House No 32, Banasree D Block, on Sunday morning.

Being informed, two fire-fighting units went to the spot and brought the fire under control.

Rampura Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge OC Moshiur Rahman confirmed the matter to the media saying that a housemaid died at House No 32, Banasree D Block. Being informed, a police team rushed to the house.

But local people, including those who work in different houses in the area as domestic workers, got furious suspecting it to be a murder, and tried to enter the building breaking the collapsible gate.

Then, additional police were deployed to control the situation. At one stage, the angry crowds torched three cars inside the garage of the house and threw brickbats at the police.

Three police members, including OC Moshiur Rahman, were injured in this connection.

The house is owned by a former tax commissioner Delwar Hossain. The housemaid worked at Delwar’s daughter Kaniz Fatema’s Mirpur house. Kaniz Fatema came to his father’s Banasree residence three days ago with her maid.

The housemaid died falling from the building on Sunday morning, they claimed.

Rejecting their claim, locals alleged that the housemaid was killed by throwing her from the building’s roof.

The victim’s body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for an autopsy, OC said, adding that the reason behind the death will be known upon receiving the report.
No one has so far been arrested in this connection, the OC added.
