An allegation has been received against the SI and Constable of Savar Model Police Station for threatening to implicate a journalist in a drug case after beating him up.
The incident took place in Chapain Taltala area of Savar Sadar Union on Wednesday night. The victim has been identified as SM Monirul Islam, 32, Savar correspondent of The New Nation.
He said, “I was having tea at a tea shop in front of my house in Chapain-Taltala area on Wednesday night. At that time, a neighbour woman was running crying loudly and saying that my husband is being taken away by some people. Later we went to the spot.”
SI Al Mamun Kabir and Constable Nazmul misbehaved on seeing us.
At one stage SI Mamun grabbed my collar and told me to leave quickly. As soon as he was told to release the collar, SI slapped and punched saying that – “If you utter one more sentence, I will imprison you in the Yaba case and send you to jail”.
Denying the allegations, Al Mamun Kabir said, “There was a slight misunderstanding. I did not assault him; I was not present. Upon identifying the constable involved, he apologised to him.”
Al Mamun said, “We were there to arrest a Chhatra Dal leader accused in a case based on confidential information.” However, he did not disclose any information about their intended arrest during the incident.
In this regard, Asaduzzaman, superintendent of police (SP) of Dhaka district told The New Nation that the investigation is going on regarding the issue. Proper action will be taken after investigation.”
