Rural bank deposits down by 22.56pc: BB

Bank deposits in rural areas have decreased by 22.56 percent, while urban deposits are up 6.37 percent, said Bangladesh Bank (BB) in its latest report made available to media on Tuesday.

The total number of bank depositors until September 2023 stood at nearly 15 crore, said the report. They deposited over Tk17 crore in their accounts during this period, reports UNB.

Among them, 1 lakh 13 thousand 586 bank accounts holders have deposits of TK 1.0 crore and above.

Around Tk 7.26 lakh crore has been deposited in these accounts. That means such account holders account for 42.35 percent of the total deposits in the country’s banking sector.

Till June 2023, the total number of depositors was over 14 crore 59 lakh with deposits amounting to Tk16.87 lakh crores in these account.

According to this, the accounts holding TK 1.0 and more increased by 32 crores in a span of three months and seven thousand 66 in a span of one year, the BB report said.

According to the Bangladesh Bank data. the number of accounts holding Tk1 crore or more increased by 7,066 in one year in the country.

At the end of September this year, the number stood at 1,13,586, up from 1,06,520 during the same period one year ago.

On the other hand, the economy is facing an investment drought and disruption in export-import trade due to instability in the currency market.

 

In September 2023, the total deposits in banks amounted to more than Tk 17.13 lakh crore, with around Tk7.26 lakh crore of the deposits are held in crore-taka accounts. Currently, such accounts own 42.35% of total deposits in the country’s banking sector, the central bank data suggests.
