Bangladesh Cricket team were all out for a paltry total of 172 in their first innings against New Zealand (NZ) on the first day of the 2nd Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the capital’s Mirpur on Wednesday.
Bangladesh lost their wickets almost regular intervals.
Later, the Kiwis tottered at 55 for the loss of five wickets before the bails were drawn for the first day.
After winning the coin-session, the Tigers decided to bat first but they had an unhappy start as opener Zakir Hasan (8) was caught at the mid-on by Kane Williamson off Mitchell Santner when Bangladesh’s score was 29.
After Zakir’s dismissal, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, the other opener could not stay at the crease for a long period as he (14) was caught at the short leg by Tom Latham off Ajaz Patel when the hosts’ total was 29 for the loss of two wickets.
Experienced Mominul Haque, the second-down batter of Bangladesh failed again as he (5) was caught behind by wicketkeeper Tom Blundell off Ajaz Patel when the home side’s score was 41 for the loss of three wickets.
In-form Najmul Hossain Shanto failed to shine with the willow as he (9) was trapped leg before wicket by Mitchell Santner when Bangladesh’s score was 47 for the loss of four wickets.
Third-down Mushfiqur Rahim and fourth-down Shahadat Hossain fought back contributing together 57 runs for the fifth wicket partnership before Mushfiqur Rahim was out as he (35) was a victim of ‘obstructing the field’ when the Tigers’ total was 104 for the loss of five wickets. Mushfiqur Rahim was the first Bangladesh batter who was out such kind of decision in Bangladesh’s history.
After Mushfiqur Rahim’s departure, Shahadat Hossain (31) was caught behind by wicketkeeper Tom Blundell off Glenn Phillips when Bangladesh’s total was 123 for the loss of six wickets.
Number-8 batter Nurul Hasan (7) was caught at the mid-on by Mitchell Santner off Glenn Phillips when the hosts’ score was 135 for the loss of seven wickets.
Fifth-down Mehidy Hasan Miraz (20) was caught at the first slip by Daryl Mitchell off Santner when Bangladesh’s total was 145 for the loss of eight wickets.
Number-10 batter Taijul Islam (6) was trapped leg before wicket by Glenn Phillips when the Tigers’ score was 154 for the loss of nine wickets.
Ninth-down Shoriful Islam (10) was caught behind by Tom Blundell off Tim Southee when Bangladesh’s innings came to an end.
Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner captured three wickets each instead of 31 and 65 runs respectively, while Ajaz Patel claimed two wickets conceding 54 runs.
Tim Southee got picked up one wicket without giving any run.
Later, right-arm spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz and left-arm spinner Taijul Islam shone with the cherry to mop up the Kiwis’ top-order batters.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz grabbed three wickets in the space of 17 runs, while Taijul Islam bagged two wickets for 39 runs.
Third-down Daryl Mitchell remained unbeaten with 12 runs, while fifth-down Glenn Phillips remained unbeaten with five runs.
